THE HISTORY OF OGBOMOSO RECREATION CLUB
The concept of having a proper Recreation Club for Ogbomoso began in a little nook and has since grown to be a force to be reckoned with in Oyo State. The idea for establishing this Club began in the late 1980s, when Col. Oladayo Popoola came up with the concept and believed that Ogbomoso deserved to have such a Club that would serve as a rallying point for all people of the town, both at home and abroad.
Col Popoola decided to consult people of like minds to found the club. As a military man who has served his country in several capacities and has travelled round the country, saw that many towns and cities have their own recreation clubs where residents and visitors can go and relax and get freshened up.It was this that geared him up to meet with a few like minds to work out the modalities of running such a club at home.
After consulting with a few friends,the inaugural meeting to give the club a form took place on May 27, 1989 at Trans-Motel, Ogbomoso. At the end of the meeting Mr.J.Dokun, who is a member of the Committee of Friends, a club which had existed in Ogbomoso before the new idea of this club expressed the support of the group for the new initiative. The minutes of that meeting noted “He, however, implored that there used to be a club called Ogbomoso Recreation Club and would therefore wish that the past records of that club could be examined with a view of possible absorption to the new club being formed”. All members present at this meeting supported the formation of the new club, the motion in support of this was moved by Mr. T. A. Aderounmu and backed by Mr Oyekan. With this, the club was formed with the meetings of May 27,1989.
Lt.Col.Adewuyi(rtd) enumerated the vision of the club and listed it as a recreational, social and economic. A committee of seven was set to work on a Draft Constitution for the club.The seven member Draft panel is made up of Col.O.Popoola, Lt.Col.B. Adewuyi(rtd),Engr J.A Makinde, Lawyer Lawumi, Mr.Wale Alagbe, Mr.O. Akinkunmi and Engr B. Lafinhan.
The club has no money of its own yet,members were asked to make the voluntary donations. At the end, 2,350 naira was collected for the take off of the club. At its next meeting many names were suggested for the club because the initial name “Ogbomoso Club” was already being used by another club. The Protem chairman suggested “Ogbomoso Recreation Club”.Other suggestions were “The Ogbomoso Club 89 ”. The three suggested names were put in long deliberation by members. In the end, “Ogbomoso Recreation Club” was adopted
On May 30, 1989, letters inviting Ogbomoso’s sons and daughters to join the Club were sent out by Col. Popoola. As Colonel Popoola shared his plans, everyone took notice and started acting on it.Without the assistance of others, he could not have accomplished this on his own. In his report, President Col. Popoola “commended Architect Akanmu for preparing the architectural drawings” at the reconvened AGM, which was a follow-up to the one that failed to form a quorum in July 1990 and was held on October 27, 1990. This was a plus for the Club because one of its members was able to use their expertise to the club’s advantage.
At the second AGM which took place on September 14, 1991, the President declared that the Ogbomoso Recreation Club had gotten the Certificate of Registration and been properly registered with the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Membership continued to grow, and members were urged to participate in the effort and assist the club’s growth in any manner they could.
By September 5th, 1992, the President declared that “139 people were members of the club.”To facilitate the membership drive, the nation was split into six zones, with a coordinator selected for each: Lagos, Col. O. Popoola, Ibadan, Engr. Aremu Makinde, Ogbomoso, Mr. Akin Akano, and Kaduna, Engr. M.A. Roy Fajinmi
